As a centerpiece of your face, your teeth and smile say a lot about you. Your appearance can really be negatively impacted by discolored teeth, not to mention your self-esteem. Fortunately, your dentist has the ability to whiten your teeth to your desired shade so that your smile is whiter and brighter.
Teeth can become stained for a variety of reasons. Some people are simply more genetically susceptible to having discolored teeth than others. And the basic aging process can also take its toll.
One of the most common reasons for having stained teeth is drinking a lot of dark-colored beverages. Drinks like coffee, tea, and red wine leave behind deposits that are known to stain the teeth. Once they are discoloring your teeth, they can be very difficult to remove on your own.
Many people have attempted to use over-the-counter whitening products like kits, toothpastes and gels, with varying results. The fact of the matter is that if you need significant whitening, these types of products are not going to help very much.
Professional teeth whitening products have higher concentrations of the active ingredients, typically some form of peroxide. They can whiten your teeth to your desired level of shade.
Another advantage of undergoing professional teeth whitening is that you will be under supervision the entire time. Your dental team will ensure that the whitening gel stays on your teeth, not on your gums, where it can lead to post-treatment sensitivity.
Zoom! is a professional tooth whitening system that gets real results. Your dental hygienist will cover up the soft tissues of your mouth to protect them from the whitening gel. They will then apply the gel to your teeth and activate it using a special LED lamp to intensify its effects. The hydrogen peroxide in the whitening gel will oxidize under the LED lamp and remove embedded tooth stains.
The entire process should only take about 45 minutes to complete, and is divided into three sessions of 15 minutes each. While your teeth are being whitened, you can completely relax or listen to music.
After the final session is complete, your hygienist will apply a fluoride gel to your teeth to prevent tooth sensitivity.
Most dentists also offer custom-fitted trays that you can take home with you to whiten your teeth at home at your own convenience. You’ll be provided with a detailed set of instructions to tell you how long to leave your trays in your mouth to achieve your desired level of shade.
